Where to find winning legal advice

14 September 2016

NSW Business Chamber’s legal firm, Australian Business Lawyers & Advisers (ABLA), has been named Workplace Relations and Employment Team of the Year at the prestigious annual Law Awards, hosted by Lawyers Weekly.

The Award serves as great recognition for the work the firm has done on behalf of the business community.

“This is a wonderful acknowledgement that what we started five years ago with the NSW Business Chamber is something clients really want,” says ABLA Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Ward.

“The whole team have worked tirelessly to achieve this and each one of them has made an important contribution.

“It was especially fitting that the firm’s Workplace Relations Practice leader, Joe Murphy, was able to be present on the night to accept the awards as he has been with us from day one in 2011, and has played a key role in our journey.”

Since becoming part of the Chamber, ABLA has become a national voice for workplace reform, performing a vital role in advocating on behalf of the Australian Chamber and the 300,000 employers that it represents. In pursuing a fairer and more flexible workplace system, the firm has pioneered employer cases through the Fair Work Commission. Notable cases include the reform of job-crippling penalty rates in the hospitality and service sectors, and achieving more flexible annual leave arrangements for employers.

The Chamber’s new Workplace Assured service, which helps employers navigate through the complex minefield of workplace compliance, also draws on the legal expertise of ABLA and the Workplace Advice Line (managed by the law firm). In the past year, this service has seen ABLA assist more than 80 businesses defend unfair dismissal claims, and appear on behalf of members in conciliations and arbitrations. The Workplace Advice Line responds to over 20,000 employer calls every year.

“[The win] is a great achievement for our law firm, and the NSW Business Chamber is very proud of the team that delivers such great service for our members and clients,” added NSW Business Chamber Chief Executive, Stephen Cartwright.

“We strive to offer our members the best services when it comes to all aspects of their business needs, and for our law firm to be recognised in this way, in front of the very best legal services providers in the country, is a wonderful testament to that.”
